Office for Faculty Excellence
The Office for Faculty Excellence (OFE) is here to support you, whether you’re teaching, doing research, or serving the university in other ways. ECU Libraries
ECU is home to three libraries which will all fall under the oversight of the University Librarian, as of July 1.
On the main campus we have a Music Library in the Fletcher Building, right down the hall from ECU’s music programs, and Joyner Library. Joyner Library is a central gathering place on Main Campus. In addition to serving as the central repository for ECU records of permanent historical value, Joyner Library also houses the Rare Book and Digital collections (among others). It’s Janice Hardison Faulkner Gallery showcases art by ECU faculty and students. Joyner also offers a range of faculty support services for both instruction and research.
Located on the Health Sciences campus, the Laupus Health Sciences Library provides resources for Health and Human Sciences, Dental Medicine, Medicine, and Nursing. Librarians are available to provide curricular and research support, including embedded assistance with Canvas courses, teaching orientations to the literature, and co-authoring systematic reviews.
Laupus Library also features History Collections relevant to the history and practice of health care in eastern North Carolina, including a lecture series for the Medical History Interest Group.

University Ombuds
If you need a sounding board, a neutral confidential place to discuss workplace challenges, or simply guidance on where to turn, the Ombuds Office offers confidential, impartial assistance to faculty and staff, with no paper trail and no judgment.
What does the Ombuds do?
The Ombuds is your neutral, confidential ally—someone who can help you find relevant ECU policies, guide you to the most helpful campus offices, coach you through tough situations, and support you in managing conflicts as they arise. Beyond individual support, the Ombuds also identifies and troubleshoots policy gaps for the university.
The office follows the International Ombuds Association Code of Ethics, which includes the principles of independence, impartiality, confidentiality, and informality.

Mentoring at ECU
No one succeeds alone. Whether you need advice on teaching, research, navigating university processes, or finding your place in the ECU community, mentors can play an important role in your success. Watch the video below as Dr. Eboni Baugh introduces a mentor mapping exercise designed to help you identify and build your support network from day one.
As you begin your journey at ECU, start thinking about who might be a good fit for your mentor network. There’s no need to rush. Building meaningful mentoring relationships takes time, and your mentor map will continue to grow and change throughout your career. The important thing is to start making connections and identifying the people who can support your success.

Recreation and Wellness
Looking for ways to stay active, relieve stress, and connect with the ECU community? Campus Recreation & Wellness (CRW) offers a wide range of opportunities for faculty, staff, students, and their families.
The Eakin Student Recreation Center, located on ECU’s main campus, features group fitness classes, fitness and strength-training equipment, an indoor track, climbing wall, courts, pools, and more. Whether you prefer lifting weights, joining a fitness class, swimming, or trying something new, there is something for every interest and experience level.
CRW Members can also take advantage of the Health Sciences Campus Recreation Center, offering fitness equipment, free weights, cross-training areas, multipurpose courts to use for basketball, pickleball, volleyball, and badminton. The Blount Recreational Sports Complex provides additional fields for recreational and intramural sports.

ECU Athletics
One of the best ways to experience Pirate Nation is by attending an ECU athletic event. With 14 NCAA Division I men’s and women’s teams competing throughout the year, there are plenty of opportunities to cheer on the Pirates and connect with fellow faculty, staff, students, and alumni.

Faculty Manual and Unit Codes
As you settle into your new role, you’ll quickly discover that the Faculty Manual is the primary resource for understanding ECU’s policies, procedures, and shared governance. It covers everything from faculty responsibilities and governance to personnel policies and academic procedures.
You don’t need to memorize it. When questions arise, your department chair, Personnel Committee chair, and experienced colleagues are excellent resources for helping you navigate the guidance it contains.
In addition to the Faculty Manual, every academic unit has a Unit Code of Operation that outlines policies and procedures specific to your department or college. Some units maintain their own code, while others follow a college-level code. The Faculty Manual provides a convenient directory to help you locate the Unit Code that applies to your academic home.
