NFO 2024 – New Faculty Check Point – FERPA

As ECU Faculty, knowing and understanding FERPA will be an important component of your position. Notably, FERPA is also referred to as the Buckley Amendment.

What is FERPA? “A federal law designed to protect the privacy of education records, to establish the right of students to inspect and review their education records, and to provide guidelines for the correction of inaccurate and misleading data through informal and formal hearings.”

Posting of a student’s grade by social security number, any sequential part thereof, or any other personally identifiable characteristic (including Banner ID) is a direct violation of FERPA. Learn more about FERPA here

You can share the following directory information without a FERPA permissions form on file:

  • Student name
  • Address
  • Major field of study
  • Dates of attendance
  • Degrees & awards received
  • Participation in officially recognized activities and sports
  • Weight & heights of athletic team members
  • Most recent previous education agency or institute attended

Download the FERPA Fact Sheet that describes FERPA, what it guarantees, and what it means for ECU faculty and staff. Any questions should be addressed to the Office of the Registrar (regis@ecu.edu).
